Tour of Homes: An Interior Design 2 culminating project

I love sharing resources, hence my podcast and showcasing talents from all around. Recently, I have been getting pinged a lot asking to share my ‘CHS Tour of Dreams’ trimester final for Interior Design that I posted on Facebook ‘FCS Interior Design Educators’ group back in 2019. When I designed this project, it was truly a ‘build-as-you-go’ or, as my students said ‘the never ending project’. The engagement and creativity level was astounding, and I hope you and your students enjoy it as much as we did.

Please feel free to modify and adapt that will best serve your population of students. If you use this project, please tag me on social media @ConnectFCSed and use the hashtag #FCSpodcast.

Let’s continue leading student success in FCS!

Graph paper, Pencil & Eraser: Draw out your 2-D elevation of the preferred floorplan using 1 of the 4 homes of your choice. Indicate where the doors will be and which way they will open.  Indicate where the windows will be along with storage (closets). Show traffic pattern.

  • Student Voice: Have 3 students evaluate your design for new ideas and perspective.
    • Once you have acquired 3 student signatures, have your instructor sign off on your design, then you can start your 3-D design using Floorplanner.com

Building: After you have designed your 3D concept, you will now build your model based on your design and mood boards.  You will use egg carton boxes/shoeboxes, cardboard, popsicle sticks, paint, textured paper towels, colored paper to build your home (materials provided).

  • You may bring in doll house furniture and buy your own materials to use.

Marketing: Write up an Air B&B advertisementhighlightingall various principles of design throughout the home and underlining all elements of design in the house. Students will demonstrate understanding of universal design and traffic patterns through their writing.

  • Students were given creative freedom to imagine and decide where their home was located and give readers a picturesque description.
  • Site 3 sources (Air B&B or realtor postings for suggestions & ideas).

Presentation Board: Students will print out their Mood boards and glue to presentation board. Students will include their original 2D draft and 3D floorplanner design on the presentation board and include their Air B&B advertisement.

Instructor: Invite students Family, Advisory board, Realtors, Admin, Superintendent, School board, and professional Interior Designers to your ‘Open House’.  Provide light snacks and refreshments just like if it were an ‘Open House’. See Advertisement (translate for inclusion)
